Creating space with Destiny Belgrave

Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Destiny Belgrave, I’m an artist, budding plant mom and pie lover. I’m a Gemini sun, Capricorn Moon and Scorpio rising, a natural born homebody, introvert and lover of sunlight. Nice to meet ya.

Where do you call home?

I call my bedroom home. It’s been a space that I’ve had the privilege to really curate and make my own. It’s a safe space that I truly feel happy and peaceful in.

What are you working on these days?

I have many things in the starting stages, there’s been a lot of mental planning, writing and digital mock ups. I don’t like to share things in their super early stages but I’ll give you a sneak peek of some papercut pieces in progress.

Could you show us one of your favorite pieces?

Manna From Heaven (2019) is currently my favorite piece. In terms of craftsmanship and concept I am just completely proud of it. It was also the first piece I made after my post grad depression. It marks the start of a new body of work and a transition to a new stage in my life.

When you're creating, what motivates you to keep going?

When I’m creating I am driven to finish by the excitement of what the completed product would be. I am a big advocate of taking ones time and letting the work take you where it needs to go. So often I take a break from creating and I focus on other creative endeavors besides my fine art practice. But overall I'm motivated by the joy of creating beautiful and meaningful work, the ability to pay homage to my family and community, and the privilege to be able to uplift and inspire those that come into contact with my work.

Could you show us where you feel most inspired?

I feel most inspired at my desk space by the window. I love sunlight and looking up at the sky and seeing the clouds move. This little space allows me a comfortable view to watch nature, hear the birds chirp and really zone out, think and create.

How has your space evolved over the last couple weeks?

Well since being home for so much during quarantine I’ve had the chance to organize my space more and add some personal decorative touches, like art and plants. It’s been quite enjoyable and my space feels warmer.

What have you been creating more space for at home?

Plants and video games! I have like three more plants on the way, I’ve been trying to have a reconciliation with nature since being cooped up inside. It’s been nice to take care of something and have some greenery inside. I also have been giving myself the pleasure of enjoying things that have nothing to do with productivity, simple joys of plant care, games and lounging around.

What is one thing you’re doing to help someone else?

At home I let my parents know that I appreciate them and I also aid in taking care of my younger sibling. I think in times like these, simple thank yous and words of gratefulness to caretakers, loved ones and essential workers can really go a long way. I am also working on bettering my inner self. Taking care of yourselves mentally, emotionally and physically can help give peace within the households that you have to be quarantined in. Along with maintaining your well being, communication with peers near and far is helpful both for you and the person involved. Human connection, empathy and engagement is always important but it’s especially important now, given our present situation.
