Our guide to organizing
cleaning supplies

Cleaning supplies is a category that can be difficult to keep track of, leading many of us to buy things we might already own or forget to buy the items we've run out of completely. With this in mind, we spoke with a few experts and gathered our favorite tips to help you create a system that works for you at home.

Collect all of your cleaning supplies in one place

First and foremost, it's important to begin by taking a few moments to pull everything out where you can see it. By looking at everything, you'll get a better sense of what you have and how to approach each item.

Group the supplies by category

Once you have everything where you can see it, survey the collection. Are there any clear categories? We like to sort items by where we use them (bathroom cleaners, kitchen cleaners) or how we use them (disinfectant spray, dishwasher fluid).

Think about how you access your cleaning supplies

If you have one cabinet or closet where all of your cleaning supplies are stored, it's important to organize it in a way that makes cleaning feel like less of a chore. It's pretty common to have a group of multi-purpose items that you use throughout your house, so make sure those are easily accessible. Ideally, when it comes time to clean, you're just grabbing one bin or basket that moves with you rather than having to shuffle back and forth to your stash.

Give everything a proper home

If you happen to be storing supplies in a few different places, be sure to pick up a set of bins or baskets for each location. This will help you avoid having to take out (and put away) a handful of items every time you'd like to use them.

Separate surplus items

More often than not, we tend to pick up items like sponges, paper towels, and garbage bags in bulk. These surplus items can quickly clutter the cabinet or closet you're using to store supplies, so if you have space, we recommend picking up a set of stackable bins to separate them and find another home.

Add space to a shelf or under the sink

Clean, minimal, and sturdy—a set of our Shelf Risers will help you instantly take advantage of the vertical space under the sink or in a closet.
